As of Monday this week, the much needed link between the Goilala District and rest of Papua New Guinea, Goilala-Mona Highway stands shattered held together by the efforts Tapini youths that can’t give it up.
Three major landslides blocked of access to the district headquarters at Tapini.
Vamup Rocks gave way on the weight of the heavy rains the previous night. This was close to the station. The High School students and the Tapini youths were sought to come out and clear the slip by constructing a makeshift bridge. This made it possible to backfill the gravel to create a passage out of the gallows.
At Lalo another big landslip occurred cutting off about 50m of the road. Here the local youths constructed a track through the mud to create a passage for light vehicles to pass.
Then Kilo, debris, stamps, mud and bolders were washed down stream as a result of a landslip up stream brought everything together on the road. All that heaped up to about 2m high and 15m wide. Again all the local youths fron Lilo, Lalo, Opore, Kone and Tapini were called out here in full strength. It took them more than three hours to clear the debris.
After two full days of digging, little pockets of tracks were made for us to escape and come down to Port Moresby yesterday. As I write these few lines I am becoming more and more worried as to what might happen if the rains continue at Tapini and nothing is done.
There’s is cheap imitation of a company employed by the provincial government to try to alleviate the problem. But the problem is much bigger than a company that has one sickly backhoe. This company cannot do what it was sent to do. It does not have the capacity. People are becoming more and more agitated about the inactivityof this one-machine company. It is good for nothing.
The local LLG president of Tapini, Mr. Keleto Kope was with us all way until the digging was completed. He eventually took a ride with us to POM. The president has borne witness to the reality of life. He said that the JDP-BPC in the government of former member has allocated funds for the road upgrade but where the money went he does not know.
